1973 Broodmare by Corliss Callan

I was not made, not bred, or born to bear.

I should be in a pasture, pretty and poised.

I will never be a broodmare.

I was bred to eat hay in the fresh air,

now, I lie impregnated with no choice.

I was not made, not bred, or born to bear.

Do you think that the new laws are fair?

Made only to silence the woman’s voice.

I will never be a broodmare.

A saddle on my back; a love affair.

Roe v. Wade is now all a vaginal tear.

I was not made, not bred, or born to bear.

Men sitting high in congressional chairs

while I sit milked by my unwanted heir.

I was not made, not bred, or born to bear.

I was rodeos, barrels, and a dramatic flair,

Now just a body destroyed due to amended bills.

I never wanted to be a broodmare.
