In Love with a Birder by Danielle Evennou

belted kingfisher
hooded merganser
mysterious song sparrow

the quickness with which you remove your glasses
perch binoculars on the bridge of your nose
always in search of

indigo bunting
yellow-throated warbler
great blue heron

but ignite for
Canadian geese
protective mockingbirds

spotting a little egret
in the stillness of pond scum
red-tailed hawk on the freeway

the way you accept my mixed-up
nomenclature tufted wood duck
cat-dog bird, barn sink and swallow
blue moon jay, red-bellied gull
laughing nuthatch
