IN THE ARMY NOW by Jefferson Huddle

After

I graduated high school at eighteen,

I thought I had outgrown my

toy-box from when I was eight.

So

I replaced my inner-child with an

ammunition box.

Sometimes,

I award myself a well–

deserved drink after an un–

deserved battle.

Some

reward themselves with well–

done steaks while wearing well–

fitted suits.

Sometimes,

I miss my lost

toys more than

lost brothers.

Sometimes,

I get a ten percent

discount at the

movies.

Jefferson (he/him) is twenty years old and grew up skateboarding in Richmond, Virginia. He hopes to attend an MFA program after finishing his BA from Old Dominion University; where he is currently enrolled.
